A DeKalb County mother is furious after her third grade daughter suffered a concussion from a fight on a school bus last Friday, Channel 2 Action News reported.

India Lee said her 8-year-old daughter, Zion, gave her cellphone video of the attack, which she told Channel 2 was unprompted.

“I just hear a bunch of kids hollering and screaming,” Lee said. “The bullying — it has to stop.”

The video obtained by the news station appears to show Zion being hit in the head by several children.

Lee, who is a nurse, said her daughter didn’t seem OK when she got home, so she took her to the hospital that evening. She had medical paperwork that shows Zion suffered a concussion, Channel 2 reported.

Lee said her daughter told her the bus driver never pulled over or turned around during the incident. She also said the school district hasn’t contacted her.

“Why would you take them home ... you should take them back to the school,” Lee said. “You need to report this. It’s something serious.”

The DeKalb County School District sent the news station a statement that said, in part: “Because of federal law (FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), the district cannot comment on specific incidents involving students... since the alleged incident occurred on the Friday before the beginning of Spring Break, it will be investigated when students return to school on April 8.”

The district’s statement also said bus drivers are supposed to report incidents to dispatch and fill out a student bus conduct form if there’s a fight. It’s unclear whether the bus driver reported this alleged fight or if the proper form was submitted.

Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, Lee said her daughter will not be riding the bus again.

“There’s not enough adult supervision on the school bus,” she said. “The bus driver can’t drive and watch the students at the same time.”
