A veteran was shot moments after he cashed his $600 benefit check, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Gregory Montford, 59, was shot twice in the back after an armed robber approached him and demanded cash, the television station reported. The robber took off after the incident, which occurred Monday afternoon along Hollywood Road in northwest Atlanta, according to Channel 2.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez reports.

“It’s one thing to steal from someone who can defend themselves,” witness Chris Pecoraro said. “It’s another thing to steal from someone who can’t.”

Montford, a grandfather, is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital. He still has a bullet lodged in his back, according to Channel 2.

Police are looking for the gunman and asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477. A $2,000 reward is being offered in the case.
