Police are investigating after a 22-year-old University of Georgia student reported being raped Saturday morning in downtown Athens, authorities said.

The attack occurred about 3 a.m. in the area of Dearing and Church streets, Athens Clarke-County police spokesman Geof Gilland said.

The student, who said she did not know her attacker, described the man as 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a dark complexion, short hair and an athletic build, according to police.

On Tuesday, Gilland said police would like to speak with “a young couple who detectives believe were in the area near the time of the incident.” Investigators believe the couple may have seen the suspect.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect can call Athens detectives at 762-400-7174 or 762-400-7070.

In the meantime, police are encouraging residents to remain vigilant of their surroundings, walk home with a group of people and remain in well-lit areas.
