A man was arrested after he attacked a University of Georgia student Thursday night “with a cutting instrument,” Athens-Clarke County police said Friday.

Cedric Courtes Smith, 26, was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the incident, police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez said in a statement.

Shortly before 10 p.m., officers responded to a report of an assault off Mark Twain Circle, he said.

The victim told officers he was walking in front of the UGA veterinary clinic when a man he didn’t know began speaking to him, according to the statement.

The victim said the man had his hands behind his back, walked toward him and punched him in his neck. The victim ran and was followed by the man for awhile before he lost him, police said.

Officers said the victim “had a large laceration to the left side of his neck that was bleeding and described the wound as a clean, deep cut,” Rodriguez said.

He described the attacker to police, who found Smith a short time later, according to the statement. Police did not recover the weapon used, Rodriguez said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
