A Texas father was arrested Saturday morning and charged with abducting his 2-month-old son and also fatally shooting a man in South Georgia.

Americus police issued a Levi’s Call for Draco Leigh Mayes after the child was taken from a home in the 100 block of Carter Street, authorities said.

Police responded to a shooting at the home about 6:30 a.m. and found 21-year-old La’Warrior Gardener with gunshot wounds, authorities said. Gardener was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Police determined the shooting suspect was the child’s father, 23-year-old Demonte Everett Mayes Jr. of Arlington, Texas, authorities said.

An Amber Alert was issued, and the Alabama Highway Patrol spotted Mayes’ Toyota Camry on U.S. 80 between Montgomery and Selma, police said.

Mayes was taken into custody, and his son was safely recovered.

Mayes is charged with murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault and kidnapping, authorities said.

Anyone with information about the shooting or abduction is asked to call Americus police at 229-924-4102.
