Police in Indiana believe a gun fired into the air in anticipation of the Fourth of July holiday led to a teen fighting for his life.

A 13-year-old boy playing basketball with friends in a residential neighborhood was struck in the head by a stray bullet Saturday night, WGN-TV reported. The boy collapsed and his friends thought he was having a seizure. Once the boy was examined at the hospital, doctors discovered he'd been shot. The boy's grandmother told WGN that he is not doing well and remains in critical condition.

Police do not believe the teens were targeted, but believe the gun was fired "like a firework." Police say it is unfortunately a common occurrence and they hope this tragic case will encourage people to be more responsible with firearms.
