A hit-and-run driver under the influence of drugs struck and killed a 16-year-old girl as the teen handed out literature from her church, Fayetteville police said Monday.
Caelyn Adams and a woman were walking in the 400 block of Hood Avenue on Saturday when an older-model Mazda pickup truck struck them without stopping, witnesses told police. The woman, who was injured, said her husband chased the driver and alerted police, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The teen was taken to Piedmont Hospital-Fayette, where she died from her injuries, Fayetteville police Lt. Mike Whitlow said. The woman was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
“Witnesses were able to obtain a license plate number from the vehicle and Fayette County deputies located the vehicle and driver a short distance away,” Whitlow said.
Adams’ father is the pastor at Middle Fayette Church of Christ. Services were canceled over the weekend, Channel 2 reported.
The driver, Marcia Annette Demarcus, 42, of Fayetteville, was arrested. She was being held Monday at the Fayette County jail on charges of DUI drugs, vehicular homicide, reckless conduct, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of failure to render aid.
