A 17-year-old was shot and killed Monday in Union County, North Carolina, according to sheriff's deputies.

A homeowner told authorities he shot the teen, who he said was breaking into his home on Happy Hollow Lane in Mineral Springs just before 4 a.m.

The killed teen was identified as Marquies Rason Waters.

Deputies said Waters, and possibly two others, entered the home, making enough noise to wake up the home's owner.

The homeowner yelled and the intruders jumped out the window, officials said.

Deputies said the homeowner found items left behind by the suspected burglars, who came back for what investigators called "evidence" left behind. Authorities did not elaborate on what items were left.

The homeowner saw Waters on the back porch, confronted him and shot him, officials said.

The homeowner knew Waters and said he lived in the neighborhood, according to deputies.

Officials said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, and nobody has been charged.
