A taxi driver was found dead in his vehicle Monday night after he was shot and crashed on a busy north DeKalb County road.

Police were called to investigate after the taxi wrecked around 11:20 p.m. outside the Ashford Embry Hills apartment complex on Henderson Mill Road. Medics discovered its driver was shot and dead at the scene, according to DeKalb County police.

“The victim was operating a taxi when he was shot, causing him to strike a fixed object off the roadway,” police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer told AJC.com. “No suspects in custody and the investigation is ongoing.”

He was identified by police as 56-year-old Zenon Jimenez Perez. Amador Pinock, who owns the Rodeo Taxi company based in Gwinnett County, said Perez was an independent contractor who rented his cab by the year. Pinock did not know if he was transporting a passenger Monday night when he was shot.

Spencer said investigators are still trying to determine if Perez was targeted or was the victim of random gunfire.
