A Suwanee man decided he’d rather flee police at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour than stop for a traffic ticket, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver, Olumide Adedamola Adedipe, 23, of Suwanee, was texting and driving at 6:19 a.m. on I-75 south near mile marker 177 and failed to maintain his lane, Monroe sheriff’s Sgt. Lawson C. Bittick said.

When a deputy put on his emergency lights to stop the 2007 Ford Explorer, the driver kept going, Bittick said.

At one point in the 10-mile pursuit, the deputy said Adedipe appeared to try to strike the deputy’s vehicle, Bittick said.

The chase ended on Arkwright Road in Bibb County, when the deputy used a PIT maneuver, where a police car forces a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways, which causes the driver to lose control and stop.

The deputy found nothing illegal in the driver’s car. Adedipe had a valid driver’s license and was not on probation at the time of his arrest, Bittick said.

The sheriff’s office has no idea why Adedipe fled, Bittick said.

Adedipe faces charges of felony fleeing and attempting to elude, aggravated assault, failure to maintain lane, texting while driving, reckless driving and aggressive driving.

Adedipe was in custody Thursday, awaiting warrants and a bond hearing.
