A tire issue caused a SUV to flip several times on I-75 in Bartow County, and the crash killed a passenger who was ejected from the vehicle, authorities said.

On Monday afternoon, a red Ford Explorer was traveling north in the middle lane of the interstate near Ga. 140, Georgia State Patrol said in a news release. The rear left tire “suffered a malfunction,” which caused the vehicle to travel into the right lane.

The driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to flip several times, the release said. The front-seat passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver was flown to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said. Neither person’s name has been released.

The WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported that several right lanes of the interstate were blocked after the crash. All lanes have since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
