When an off-duty Forsyth County deputy was driving on Ga. 400 Wednesday morning, he was surprised to see a driver traveling toward him in the opposite direction.

Dawson County deputies were called to assist, and the incident nearly led to a deputy being hit by the wrong-way driver, according to a Facebook post by the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Ga. 400 when the off-duty deputy saw what was going on, the post said. The off-duty deputy conducted a traffic stop, which is when the Dawson deputies showed up to provide backup.

However, after a “brief encounter,” the suspect fled the scene, nearly hitting a deputy in the process, the post said. A wrong-way chase ensued along the southbound lanes of Ga. 400.

Near Burnt Stand Road, deputies deployed Stop Sticks, which caused the tires on the passenger side of the suspect’s vehicle to deflate, the post said. However, the chase continued onto the northbound lanes of Ga. 400.

Georgia State Patrol troopers later took over the chase when it entered Lumpkin County, the post said. A trooper successfully performed a PIT maneuver just north of Chesterra Drive, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Neither the suspect’s name nor the suspect’s charges were released by the sheriff’s office. AJC.com has reached out to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol for more information.
