A River Ridge High School student pulled out a knife on campus Friday morning and cut himself in front of other students, a spokeswoman for the Cherokee County School District said.

An email sent to parents just before noon said the student, who was “in a very upset state,” told classmates that he had a knife in his bag and then began to injure himself.

The student did not suffer serious injuries and will face disciplinary consequences, the email said.

“We take the safety of our students and staff very seriously,” district spokeswoman Barbara Jacoby wrote, encouraging students and staff to report any school safety concerns to police or administrators.
