A standoff in DeKalb County ended Tuesday morning after a man held 11 children and one woman hostage at a motel.
The suspect, who was armed with a knife, stabbed himself in the neck when authorities approached but did not injure any of the hostages, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.
Police said he was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Authorities did not identify him.
From around 2 a.m. until 7:30 a.m., he held 11 children and a woman at Rite 4 Us Inn & Suites in Decatur. His hostages included a 3-month-old child.
Officers initially responded to a report of a domestic dispute involving assault at the motel. The motel was evacuated.
The flashing blue lights of police cars could be seen from nearby Interstate 20 as officers kept the road in front of the motel closed during negotiations.
