Cherokee County authorities are looking for a man who broke into cars and fired several shots at a homeowner who chased him with a bat.

Canton police responded to a report of multiple car break-ins on Oconee Way about 4:15 a.m. Thursday, the department said in a news release.

Officers learned the homeowner confronted the man with the bat and hit his maroon sedan as the car sped from the scene. While driving away, the man opened fire, according to authorities.

The homeowner was not injured, but “officers discovered a bullet hole in the victim's garage, holes in nearby vehicles and shell casings in the street near the caller’s residence,” police said in the news release. “Further investigation revealed all vehicles entered were unlocked at the time of entry.”

Police do not have a description of the shooter. However, police said his car should have damage to the driver’s side door and window.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call 911, the police department at 770-720-4883 or Det. Kyle Smith at kyle.smith@cantonga.gov.
