DeKalb County police are investigating a shooting death after a man’s body was found in the basement of a home early Monday.

The homeowner heard shots fired from the basement about 2:05 a.m., DeKalb police Lt. Lonzy Robertson said. The homeowner later found 30-year-old Steven Mayer, who rented the basement of the home in the 2300 block of Phillips Road, with multiple gunshot wounds, Robertson said.

The shooter left the scene, police said.

“We have not made any connections to any other homicides (that) may have happened in the area,” Robertson said.

Police have not released a motive or a description of the shooter, Channel 2 Action News reported. Neighbors told the news station they heard the gunshots, and that they often hear gunfire in the middle of the night.

“We do get calls about shots fired in that area,” Robertson told Channel 2.

No other details were released.
