One police officer died and a second was injured after they were shot during a traffic stop in San Diego late Thursday.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman confirmed the death at a news conference in front of Scripps Mercy Hospital early Friday. The officers were taken to the hospital after shots rang out around 11 p.m. local time Thursday.

Just before 4 a.m. Friday, authorities said the other shot officer is expected to recover. He was in surgery for hours after the shooting.
