A Roswell mother was charged with DUI and endangering the life of a child after allegedly driving head-on into another car.

Roswell police say Melissa Hughes, 34, was driving under the influence Oct. 27 and texting while her 3-year-old daughter sat in the car. Hughes’ car collided with a Honda Accord near Atlanta Street and Jones Drive, according to the police report.

Hughes suffered a head injury in the crash and was taken to North Fulton Hospital for treatment. Her daughter was not injured.

Sheila Moore, the mother of the woman driving the Accord, told Channel 2 Action News that the crash was so forceful the car came off its frame. She said her daughter suffered severe injuries.

Hughes is out on bond.

This is not the first incident in Roswell this year involving parents allegedly under the influence and behind the wheel.

In July, a mother was arrested after being found asleep in her car and breastfeeding. Police believe she was under the influence of drugs or other medications.

In April, a father was arrested in Roswell for DUI and child endangerment after police said he sped to a Chuck E. Cheese.
