A Rome man faces a multitude of charges after allegedly choking and punching a Floyd County deputy during a drug-related arrest Tuesday afternoon.

Dustin Warren Ballard, 24, allegedly used a rope on his backpack to choke the deputy during a scuffle on Flannery Street, the Rome News-Tribune reported.

Jail records indicate Ballard was trying to get rid of drugs when the alleged assault occurred, the newspaper reported. He’s also accused of hitting the deputy in the face before he was restrained.

It’s unclear why the deputy was trying to arrest Ballard ahead of the alleged assault, but the county’s jail records indicate the 24-year-old was probation.

Ballard is charged with obstruction, aggravated assault of an officer in the performance of their duties, methamphetamine possession, two counts of probation violation, misdemeanor battery on a police officer and misdemeanor marijuana possession, records show.

He previously spent about four years in prison after being convicted of burglary, entering auto and giving false statement charges, according to Georgia Department of Corrections records.
