The man, known as A Duan, found the buyer online who paid 23,000 Yuan (about $3,535) for the baby, The Independent reports. According to authorities, Duan wanted to use the money to purchase a new iPhone and motorbike.

“I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them,” Xiao Mei, the baby's mother, said, according to reports. “I really didn’t know that it was illegal.”

According to The Epoch Times, the buyer turned himself into authorities after the parents were arrested.
