Skeletal remains found in a suitcase along I-75 in Butts County belong to a human, the GBI said Friday afternoon. But it could take several weeks to determine an identity and cause of death.

A motorist searching for a lost item near exit 201 found the suitcase Thursday, according to GBI spokesman Bahan Rich.

The motorist had frequently traveled the stretch of I-75 while visiting his wife in an Atlanta hospital, Butts Sheriff Gary Long told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The man believed he had lost something from his car during one of his trips and returned to the area Thursday, Long said. That’s when he located the suitcase.

Butts deputies were called to the scene, along with GBI investigators.

The remains were examined by a GBI medical examiner, but a forensic anthropologist will continue the investigation, which could take several weeks, Rich said Friday.
