A Gwinnett County middle school student faces a weapons charges after the child brought a gun to campus and showed it to fellow students, school officials said.

Administrators received a tip that an eighth grade student had the gun, Lanier Middle School Principal Bryce Fulcher said in a letter sent to parents about Friday’s incident.

A search revealed the student did have a weapon and showed it to other students, but did not threaten anyone, Fulcher said.

“Multiple students came forward and reported that the student had shown them the weapon,” he stated in the letter.

The student, whose name was not released, faces a charge of having a weapon on campus. Further school disciplinary action is also expected.

The investigation revealed the weapon belonged to the student’s parents and was brought from home.

“When it comes to school safety efforts, our students, parents and staff all play an important role,” Fulcher said, “and I encourage you to continue to come to us when you have information or concerns related to students safety.”
