A man accused of shooting and killing his wife, then turning the gun on himself, is now facing charges for allegedly shooting at another married couple and their child during the incident.

Alton Kelly, 53, was charged with felony murder and four counts of aggravated assault, Gwinnett County police Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

Detectives said Kelly shot his wife Melissa Kelly, 45, at her home, then went downstairs and shot into the bedroom of a married couple and their son. The couple and child are extended family, and they were not injured in the shooting, Pihera said.

The incident happened about 5:40 a.m. Monday in the 3700 block of Bridge Walk Drive.

Alton and Melissa Kelly were taken to Gwinnett County Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where the wife later died of her injuries. Alton Kelly was in critical but stable condition at last check Monday night, Pihera said.

“As soon as he is discharged from the hospital, he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail,” Pihera said.

It is unclear when that will happen.

“This is a horrific crime that will have a lasting effect on many members of the Kelly family and the community,” Pihera said.
