Gwinnett County police say they have charged a man who allegedly stole more than $36,000 from multiple clients after he promised to help with their immigration status.

Eddi Bueno-Cabrera, 46, is a convicted felon and has been deported three times, Cpl. Michele Pihera said Thursday. He is originally from the Dominican Republic.

Bueno-Cabrera has been charged with three counts of theft by deception and three counts of unauthorized practice of law, Pihera said. He remains at large.

Bueno-Cabrera identified himself as an immigration lawyer and met the victims at the Mozart Bakery in the 1600 block of Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth, Cpl. Deon Washington said.

Police also said Bueno-Cabrera had a vendor stand at the Pendergrass Flea Market in the 5600 block of U.S. 129 in Pendergrass.

“Additional victims have come forward claiming to have been scammed by the fake illegal attorney,” Pihera said. “The lead investigator fears that there are still victims who have not reported this crime.”

Anyone with information about Bueno-Cabrera's whereabouts is asked to contact police at 770-513-5300. Tipsters can also remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting crimestoppersatlanta.org.
