A man who died early Sunday in northwest Atlanta was shot in the back and was “carrying a large sum of cash,” police said.

The initial investigation also revealed that narcotics were found in his apartment, according to Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Lisa Bender.

The man was identified as Dedrell J. Knox, 41, of Atlanta, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.

Officers had responded to the 900 block of Desoto Street on a person shot call.

The victim was found about 3:45 a.m. lying in the grass in front of an apartment complex, Bender said.

Knox was pronounced dead at the scene.
