A man allegedly tried to take an officer’s Taser during an arrest in Newton County on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Christopher Ashby, of Conley, was smoking methamphetamine along with Dustin Aldridge at a trailer park off Turner Lake Road when officers arrived around 8 a.m., Covington police told Channel 2 Action News.

The scene quickly developed into a struggle between Ashby and the officer, which eventually moved to the ground, Channel 2 reported. Shortly after, Ashby allegedly tried to run at the officer, who then deployed his Taser.

The officer missed, and Ashby allegedly tried to wrestle the Taser away from the officer until backup arrived and arrested both Ashby and Aldridge, Channel 2 reported.

“This is always a scary situation when you have a one-on-one confrontation with an individual,” police Cpt. Ken Malcom told the news station. “He was able to maintain control ... at least until other officers arrived, and he was able to make the arrest without it ending worse than it did.”

Ashby faces charges of attempting to remove an officer's weapon, felony obstruction, possession of meth and possession of a schedule IV controlled substance along with three misdemeanors, jail records show.

Aldridge faces a possession of meth charge and two misdemeanors, according to jail records. He remains in jail on a $6,500 bond, while Ashby was denied bond.
