Fulton County police have identified a person of interest in the death of a 16-year-old girl they believe was killed by celebratory Fourth of July gunfire.
Rasheedah Evans, 16, was inside her home on Harper Valley Drive in College Park on Saturday night when she was struck by a stray bullet and killed. Fulton County police spokesman Lt. Scott McBride said detectives have since identified 23-year-old Marcel Smith as a person of interest.
Smith is “only wanted for questioning at this time,” McBride said Sunday morning. Investigators believe he may have been with a group of July 4th revelers shooting fireworks and guns to celebrate the holiday.
“It is believed that the gunshot that killed (Evans) … was celebratory in nature and that the bullet that struck the victim was unintentional,” McBride said, “but we need to speak to Mr. Smith so that we can confirm these details.”
Evans was sitting on the couch in her living room when she was killed, McBride said.
