A pedestrian was killed Sunday evening after he was hit by a car while trying to cross Ga. 42, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jeffrey Duane Land, 35, had been walking south on Ga. 42 near Murray Road when he crossed the road into northbound traffic, Monroe County sheriff’s Sgt. Lawson Bittick said. A white BMW traveling northbound struck Land.

Land was taken to a hospital with severe injuries and later pronounced dead.

No charges have been filed against the driver involved in the crash.

Bittick said Land is believed to be a homeless man who lived near the scene of the deadly crash.
