A 14-year-old who was a standout football player on his middle school team in Carroll County died in a car crash Saturday.
The grieving family of Devon Thomasson told Channel 2 Action News he died after the car he was riding in lost control only 100 feet from his home.
“It’s something a parent should never have to deal with, but it’s life,” his mother, Ansley Thomasson, told Channel 2. “My baby was one of a kind. There will never be another.”
His sister, 16-year-old Teonna, was driving the car when she said she swerved to avoid hitting a green pickup truck that was in her lane, Channel 2 reported. That caused her car to go off the road, hitting an embankment.
She was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, while Devon died at the scene.
“He would do anything for anybody,” his mother told the news station. “Just ask, he was a very, very, very caring soul.”

Devon Thomasson was an eighth grader at Central Middle School. His football coach, Nathan Horsley, said he was a natural born leader.
“Unfortunately through this loss, you got to see how he impacted a lot of kids here at our school and the surrounding community,” Horsley told the news station.
The middle school lowered its flag to half staff in honor of Thomasson, and grief counselors were at the school Monday. The middle school plans to dedicate next season to him and put decals with his number (34) on its helmets, Channel 2 reported.
His funeral is scheduled for Saturday. The crash remains under investigation.
