The person who was shot Tuesday after allegedly striking an officer and grabbing a Georgia deputy’s gun has been identified as a 19-year-old Atlanta man.

Devon DeShawn Ward was flown to a Chattanooga hospital, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. His condition was not known Wednesday morning.

The incident began about 12:20 p.m. when deputies and Summerville police were in a residential area to investigate a robbery, Chattooga County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Kevin Woods said. Ward struck an officer and ran, officials said.

After a chase, Agent Caine Railey and Ward wrestled on the ground, according to Sheriff Mark Schrader.

During the struggle, Ward grabbed Railey’s weapon, Woods said. Railey fired, hitting Ward in the stomach. Railey is a narcotics investigator assigned to the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, the Times Free Press reported.

The GBI is investigating, which is routine in shootings involving police.
