The Oglethorpe County Athletic Booster Club treasurer is accused of stealing more than $100,000 in funds for personal use, authorities said.
Tiffany Gomes was charged Wednesday with theft by taking after she told the GBI she used money from the club’s bank account for her own purposes, the Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The sheriff’s office said the theft was discovered after the club’s president received a call Oct. 17 from the bank. During the call, the president was informed of a requested to the bank to make a payment on a loan taken out by one of the officers. The president was not aware of this loan, and according to the sheriff’s office, had not authorized it.
After revising the club’s bank account and most recent financial statements, thousands of unauthorized payments to bank loans, credit cards, car payments and spa days were found, according to the release. That’s when the club reported the theft to the sheriff’s office.
Gomes is accused of making the transactions between February 2017 and last month, police say. The case is under investigation by the GBI.
The club said it has discussed adding checks and balances and oversight to prevent a similar incident.
Gomes turned herself in to the county’s jail Monday and is out on bond.
