A Newton County man was found guilty Wednesday of several sex crimes, including raping and molesting a relative, authorities said.

Tavaris Curgil, 35, of Covington, was convicted of rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes and child molestation, District Attorney Layla Zon said.

The assaults occurred on three occasions between April and May of 2017 when the child’s mother left her daughter in Curgil’s care, Zon said. He was 32 at the time of the abuse and she was 12.

The child disclosed the abuse to her mother in August 2017 and warrants were issued for Curgil’s arrest, prosecutors said. He was in Florida at the time, however, and wasn’t captured until May 2018
