A 14-year-old girl was in surgery Tuesday morning after she was shot while hanging out with friends, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The girl was with four other teenagers at the Towne West Manor apartments off Brownlee Road in southwest Atlanta when she took a bullet to her stomach, police told the news station.

The group had scattered before officers arrived about 11:30 p.m. Monday, and the 14-year-old was forced to seek help from another woman nearby, Atlanta police Capt. Reginald Moorman said.

“This witness was able to inform us that the victim told her she was shot and helped her get some assistance,” he said.

She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. When she gets out of surgery Tuesday, officers are hoping the girl will be able to identify the person who shot her, Channel 2 reported.

“We’re trying to reach out and speak with those other parties that were involved,” Moorman said.

An investigation is ongoing.
