A 6-year-old is out of the hospital, but she’s still unable to walk on her right leg after being mauled by a pit bull in Newton County, her mother told AJC.com.
Clarinesha Harris of Fitzgerald said she had taken her children to visit their father at his home off Fieldview Lane in unincorporated Covington when her daughter was attacked by the dog. As they prepared to leave, she said she heard her daughter Candice scream in pain from the neighbor’s front lawn, followed by a gunshot.
“When we heard her yelling, my 5-year-old son was already telling his dad that the dog had his sister,” she said. “When we got to her, the neighbor had already shot (the dog) once.”
The pit bull bit Candice’s right leg and was dragging her around Evelyn Rico’s lawn, AJC.com previously reported. Rico’s son, Rico Dean, shot and killed the dog after previous attempts to free the child failed.

“She was bleeding real bad,” Dean previously told Channel 2 Action News. “The dog had the little girl’s leg and was shaking it.”
It’s still unclear who owned the dog, which was not wearing a collar. AJC.com has reached out to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for more information.
As for Candice, she’s back home in Fitzgerald. Even though moving around is a challenge, Harris said her family is doing what they can.
“We’re trying to make it as comfortable as possible for her,” Harris said.
