A DeKalb County mother was found guilty Tuesday of shooting her son in the head, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Latoya Tilson said she was protecting her 15-year-old son during a fight in April 2015. When she grabbed a small-caliber handgun and fired several shots into the air, she struck a 17-year-old in the buttocks and fatally wounded her son, Pierre.

When College Park officers arrived at the Godby Road apartment complex, Pierre Tilson wasn't moving. A bullet was lodged in his head, and he wasn't breathing, according to police.

As her son clung to life, Tilson was booked into jail. She was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, reckless conduct, cruelty to children, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, violation of the family violence act and carrying a concealed weapon.

A jury took several days to return the guilty verdict after having deadlocked before the holiday weekend, Channel 2 reported. They did not find Tilson guilty of murder. Instead, jurors said she was guilty of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

Tilson is expected to be sentenced in August.
