A former Barrow County middle school teacher has been indicted on federal child pornography charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Monday.
"Through the vigilance of our law enforcement partners, this defendant is no longer teaching, and will face the consequences of his actions," U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in an emailed statement.
William Matthew Kimbrell, 27, of Covington, is accused of distributing pornography beginning in October 2012, when he lived in a Statesboro apartment complex, Yates said. Later in 2012 and into 2013, investigators determined Kimbrell was still offering to distribute the pornography, but the computer's Internet address was located at a Covington home, Yates' office said in an emailed release.
Earlier this year, federal investigators obtained search warrants for Kimbrell's Covington home. Kimbrell had allegedly deleted the bulk of the pornographic materials, Yates' office said. But computer forensic experts determined he allegedly accessed child pornography on the Internet from October to December 2013, while he was working as a teacher.
"No matter how cleverly a suspect may think he has covered his tracks by deleting or encrypting illegal photos and videos, our special agents and computer forensic analysts are highly trained and skilled at finding the evidence of their crimes," Brock D. Nicholson, Homeland Security special agent, said in an emailed statement.
On March 17, Kimbrell resigned from his position at a Barrow County school, investigators said. He was indicted the following day by a federal grand jury.
