A Marietta man died in a fiery two-vehicle crash Wednesday in Alabama while returning home from his aunt’s funeral, according to multiple media reports.

David Longon Cranford, 65, was driving back to Georgia after attending the funeral in Etowah County, radio station WEIS reported. Authorities believe he suffered a medical emergency shortly before the crash.

The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 278 near Ala. 11, Coroner Jeremy Deaton told the radio station. Cranford’s van collided with a tractor-trailer, with both of them erupting into flames.

Cranford was ejected from his van and was pronounced dead at the scene, WEIS reported.

The coroner’s office and Alabama State troopers will investigate the crash.
