A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Tuesday to robbing and shooting a Georgia Tech professor in 2012, according to the Fulton County district attorney’s office.

Antonio Ingram, now 23, shot Dr. Augustine Esogbue, wounding him in the shoulder, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said in a news release.

The shooting happened while Esogbue, professor emeritus in the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was driving down Fairburn Road. Ingram walked into the middle of the street pointing a gun and immediately opened fire, leaving at least five shell casings on the ground that were later found by investigators.

After Esogbue stopped his car, Ingram reached in and stole a bag with a large amount of cash and personal items and ran off.

Police found Ingram in a nearby church, with blood on his shirt and a large amount of cash. The gun found near the scene of the shooting had DNA that matched Ingram’s.

Ingram will serve 15 years in prison, followed by five years of probation.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
