A man crashed across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium early Tuesday while trying to escape gunfire in northwest Atlanta.

Officers responded to the intersection of Northside and Martin Luther King Jr. drives just after 1:45 a.m., Atlanta police said in a statement.

The man, identified as 24-year-old Richard Harvey, told police his sister sent him to the 400 block of McDaniel Street to meet someone. Police did not disclose the purpose of the meeting.

“Upon meeting the unknown male,” police said, “the male then came outside to get into his vehicle.”

Around the same time, another unidentified man emerged, started yelling at them and opened fire.

That is when Harvey sped away from the location, lost control of the vehicle and crashed. The car came to rest across from the stadium, police said.

A bullet grazed Harvey’s left hand. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was stable.

According to police, Harvey “could not provide the reason for the argument,”  “wouldn’t provide information on the male he picked up and was unwilling to provide us with his statement.”

With no witnesses or surveillance footage, police have not made any arrests in the case.
