Shell casings are scattered outside the Brockett Place Condominiums, where police believe the man was shot.

A man was shot outside a DeKalb County condominium complex early Tuesday morning and died in an SUV while trying to get away, officials said.

The victim, identified Wednesday as 27-year-old Avis McKeever of Decatur, was shot at the Brockett Place Condominiums about 4 a.m., Clarkston police assistant Chief Thadius Brown said.

McKeever tried to drive away but died from his injuries in the vehicle in the middle of Brockett Road, just south of Stone Mountain Freeway, according to police.

After receiving initial 911 calls about the shooting, officers found the man after people reported seeing a Chevrolet Tahoe sitting idle in the street, which is located a few blocks from the apartment complex.

The car was “riddled with bullets,” Brown said. Photos from the scene show multiple shell casings outside the condo.

“Officers are working the scene,” Brown said. “Detectives are doing their best to try to track down leads.”
