The man, who appeared to be in his 60s, sustained second- and third-degree burns before bystanders were able to put out the flames, Lafayette police Cmdr. Brian Rosipajla and police dispatchers told the Daily Camera.

The man stopped a car outside the entrance to the Walmart at 745 U.S. Highway 287 in Lafayette around 5:20 p.m. Sunday, police said. He shouted for the attention of passers-by and told them to videotape him before he doused himself and the car in gas and lit himself on fire, the Daily Camera reported.

He was engulfed in flames by the time he got out of the car, spread his arms and told bystanders not to extinguish the fire, according to KDVR.

Bystanders ignored him and put out the fire covering him, although they were unable to stop the car fire, police said.

Rosipajla told the Daily Camera the man’s injuries were critical. No other people were injured.
