A man was shot in the head and killed Monday afternoon in southwest Atlanta, prompting a homicide investigation.

Just after 7 p.m., police received a call about a man who had been shot in the 200 block of Thornton Street, Atlanta police said. Officers found the man with a gunshot wound to his head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are speaking with witnesses to gather more information on the shooting. Homicide detectives are also at the scene.

No other information has been released.
