A carjacking suspect is critically injured after being shot Friday afternoon outside a busy Buckhead gas station, Atlanta police said.

Officers were called to the Shell station at the intersection of Powers Ferry and Roswell roads about 1:45 p.m., police spokesman Officer Anthony Grant said.

They arrived to find a man who appeared to have been shot once in the head. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

“The preliminary investigation indicates an SUV occupied by three males pulled up to a sedan that was getting gas and an occupant of the SUV exited and attempted to carjack the sedan,” Grant said. “A nearby witness saw what was occurring, approached to intervene and was fired upon by the suspect attempting to carjack the sedan.”

The witness returned fire, striking the carjacking suspect, police said. The SUV then left the scene and the witness remained at the gas station to speak with police.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.
