A 66-year-old man was shot Monday morning after he said he offered someone a ride home from a Fulton County grocery store, police said.

Leslie Jerome Arnold of College Park told police he offered a man whom he didn’t know a ride from the Kroger on Old National Highway, according to a police report.

While walking to Arnold’s car, the man took out a gun and tried to carjack Arnold, the report states.

The two men struggled inside the car and Arnold was struck by gunfire. Arnold told police he heard three shots and felt pain in his chest. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The shooter ran off, police said.

According to surveillance footage and a description from police, the man is black, between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-1 and about 150 to 160 pounds. He has several tattoos on his neck and face. At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a black and red jacket, a hoodie, camouflage pants and tan boots or shoes.

Police took Arnold to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is in critical condition, police said.
