Man killed in Newton County double shooting identified
One man was killed and another wounded in a Monday night shooting on a residential Newton County street.
Newton sheriff’s office Sgt. Cortney Morrison said the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at a home on Gum Tree Court near Covington. Responding deputies found 23-year-old Divante Simmons in front of the home. Another man, 35, was also shot but was still alive and taken to a local hospital.
His condition was unknown Tuesday morning, Morrison said.
There were “multiple subjects” outside the home when the shots were fired, Morrison said. What triggered the gunfire was unclear.
No further information was released.
“Investigators are interviewing witnesses and processing the evidence that was collected last night,” Morrison said.
