Atlanta police are looking for the motorist they say fatally struck a man on I-20 shortly after midnight Friday and sped away.

The hit-and-run incident occurred on the westbound lanes of the interstate, near the Hamilton E. Holmes exit, at about 2:15 a.m., officials said. Police said the victim was driving a 2006 Saturn Ion when he rear-ended a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. Both drivers pulled over to the right shoulder of I-20 and exited their vehicles.

As the man driving the Saturn walked back to his vehicle to get his jacket, he was hit by an unknown vehicle, police said. The man died at the scene, police said.

Authorities have not identified the victim because they have been unable to notify his family. He was 30 years old, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police had no description of the vehicle that hit the man, other than it has damages to the passenger’s side.
