One man died at the scene and the other was shot in the leg, police said.

A 43-year-old man went to a southwest Atlanta home Thursday night to find his wife’s stolen car, according to police. Tiawan Williams found the car, but he was killed in a shootout with the man accused of stealing it, police said Friday.

Williams went to a home on Nathan Road, where he found Quordell Tarver, who he believed took the car, Atlanta police Officer Lisa Bender said.

“Both males were armed and got into a verbal altercation that escalated into gunfire and both were struck by gunfire,” Bender said in an emailed statement.

Officers were called to the scene at 8:39 p.m. and found both men with gunshot wounds. Williams died at the scene and Tarver, who was shot in the leg, was in stable condition after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Tarver was arrested on several unrelated charges, including outstanding felony warrants for weapons, robbery and escape, police said. The investigation continued Friday.
