A man was hit by a car and killed Saturday while trying to help a driver whose vehicle broke down on a major metro Atlanta artery.

The wreck happened on I-285 westbound near Ashford Dunwoody Road about 2:25 p.m., Dunwoody police spokesman Sgt. Robert Parsons said.

Investigators at the scene determined a vehicle had broken down on the interstate, Parsons said. The man had stopped behind the stalled vehicle and was trying to help when he was struck.

Police declared the man dead at the scene of the crash, Parsons said. The man’s identity was not released. It is not clear if the driver who hit the man remained at the scene.

No other injuries were reported in the wreck.  No charges have been filed in the case.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Dunwoody Police Officer Chris Forman at 678-382-6900 or at Christopher.Forman@dunwoodyga.gov.
