A Florida man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attacking his girlfriend in Smyrna, Cobb County authorities said Friday.

Calvin Thomas Jones, 36, pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated assault, said Kimberly Isaza, spokeswoman for the Cobb district attorney’s office.

The attack was on April 29 and left the victim with a broken rib and bruises to her face and arm, officials said.

“Calvin Jones strangled the victim with his bare hands,” Assistant District Attorney Matt Carlton said. “[Jones] beat, punched and kicked the victim, bruising her face and arm and breaking a rib.

“Calvin Jones then tried to persuade the victim to lie for him, so he could escape the consequences of his actions, all the while insinuating it was the victim’s fault. This was in no way the victim’s fault. Now, Calvin Jones has been held accountable for his actions.”

The attack happened after Jones became upset with the victim, with whom he had a romantic relationship for more than a year, Isaza said. He would not let her leave the apartment where it happened, which was in Smyrna.

The victim got away and had a passerby call 911, Isaza said. Jones also left the scene. He has been in custody since the day after the incident.
