Uber driver Joanne Ward pulled up to a Decatur apartment expecting to pick up a customer.
But when she arrived at the Thicket Way complex Tuesday afternoon, she found a man lying face down in the grass near a breezeway outside building 14, according to a DeKalb County police report obtained Friday by AJC.com.
Ward could not see that the man in the grass, identified by police as Antoine DePass, had been fatally stabbed multiple times in the chest and head. She asked customer Justin Gold if he knew what was wrong with the man.
“I don’t know him,” police said Gold told Ward. “That ain’t got nothing to do with me. I need to get out of here. My grandmother sick.”
Ward called 911 and waited for authorities to arrive. Gold, 24, darted from the scene, officials said. According to a warrant, he and DePass were cousins, but family members say that’s not true.
Gold requested an Uber after stabbing DePass, DeKalb police Sgt. J.D. Spencer said.

Investigators said the men had a dispute before the deadly stabbing. It is not clear what led to the disagreement.
Gold confessed Tuesday night to stabbing DePass, 38, of Ellenwood, and was arrested on a charge of murder. He had bloody knives in his backpack, according to a warrant.
Gold was taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
